Your tongue is fascinating. I could give you so many facts, but today I'll give three of the most interesting I found.
The Tongue is Gross
It is scientifically one of the grossest things on your body. One study released by Harvard showed that there are 615 different bacteria in the mouth and your tongue is swimming in them! That's science. Think about it, whatever the tongue touches immediately becomes gross, not only actually, but also visually. A spoonful of food before going in the mouth is normal. The moment it enters the mouth, touches the tongue, and you show your food to the world, people will turn their heads, cover their eyes, and squeal in horror. You don't even have to chew the food. It's automatically gross.
Heaviest Weight Lifted By the Tongue
The heaviest recorded weight ever lifted by the human tongue is 27 Lbs. 9 Oz. The fellow that holds this absurd record is Thomas Blackthorne. In 2004 he went on Guinness and stunned the world. I'm warning you, if you're squeamish, do not look it up. It involves a hook through his tongue.
The Tongue Is Not The Strongest Muscle In the Body
I know, I was surprised as you are. It's not even close. The muscle that exerts the most pressure is the jaw and the muscles that produce the most force are the quads and glutes. But, The tongue does have an amazing ability to not get tired. Your tongue is actually made up of 8 muscles with built-in redundancy. When one gets tired another takes over and you never notice. That's why your tongue never gets sore or overworked from use. And that leads me to the point of this post.
Sometimes we wish our tongue could get tired. Have you ever noticed that the more you talk the more you seem to get yourself in trouble? Proverbs 10 tells us, "When there are many words, sin is unavoidable..." This week James looks at his congregation, the world, and the Scriptures to remind us of how dangerous our tongues are. While it's not the strongest muscle in the body, it is by far the most dangerous.
Join us tomorrow as we discuss the dangers of our words (You know the things formed by your tongue). James paints a vivid picture of the tongue and gives us a solution for controlling that rebel organ.
