The Will of God in a Cup of Espresso

A first-year MBA student felt for years that God was calling him to "More." And to be honest, after years of schooling he wasn't even sure he wanted to be in the business world. During this time, to make ends meet, he was working at a local coffee shop making cappuccinos and americanos. One day, during a long shift, he took a break and ordered an espresso hoping it would give him the energy to complete his day. When the cup came to him, he thanked his co-worker for making it and took his 15 minutes. Upon the first sip of espresso he looked down and clear as day he saw two letters that had formed in the crema foam: P and C. This was it! This was his call from God! He immediately jumped up, quit his job, dropped out of his program, and went out to P-reach C-hrist. He quickly got an occasion to preach at a local church while a pastor was out. He invited some of his friends from his old job and was really excited about the opportunity. Sadly, he was a horrible preacher. After his sermon, one of his former co-workers came up to him, patted him on the shoulder, and with concern in her eyes quietly said, “I know you didn't want to work in business, but are you sure God wasn’t just trying to tell you to P-repare C-offee?”

Ouch right? If you consider yourself a Christian there is this idea that life will be better if we know exactly what God wants us to do with our lives. We want God to call us to do something special. Where calling used to be for preachers and missionaries, I'm grateful that calling has expanded to almost any profession. You can be called to be a teacher, a missionary, a banker, or a coffee preparer. So if we believe that God can call us to any profession, the question becomes, what is God calling me too? Or, what is God's will for my life in the area of employment?

While it may be tempting to look for God's will, his desire for our lives, in a cup of coffee or the clouds on a spring day. That's not the way it usually happens. Tomorrow we are going to look at how we can know and do the will of God. I think you'll be surprised at how freeing, simple, and helpful the process is. I'd love to see you at church tomorrow.

In Christ,

Wake Up the Earth Festival in JP: Saturday, May 5
Every year Spontaneous Celebrations holds a Wake Up the Earth festival in Jamaica Plain. There are food vendors, community organizations, businesses, artists, musicians, and lots of people. This year Mosaic JP has a booth. We need volunteers to help run the booth for the six-hour duration. Let Allie know if you'd like to help with that.
