This week as I was studying for the sermon I came across an amazing quote from the late evangelist and author Vance Havner.
That's powerful. But it's not just some inspirational quote, it's something we see throughout the scriptures. Havner mentions Peter and the woman who broke the alabaster jar of perfume to wash Jesus' feet, but he could have also gone on to mention almost every "hero" we find in the Bible.
- Noah- Drunk
- Moses- Murderer
- Esther- A slave
- David- Adulterer
- Mary Magdalene- Demon Possessed
- Abraham- Liar
- Joseph- Boastful
- Solomon- Womanizer
You see, God isn't looking to work in the life of a perfect person or even a person who has it all together. He is looking for a broken person who is willing to surrender to him.
After King David (Yes, "David and Goliath" David) had an affair with Bathsheba and then murdered her husband to cover it up, he was confronted with his sin by the prophet Nathan. David had not even realized the gravity of what he had done. Yet, once his sin became apparent to him he immediately repented by going to God in a powerful prayer we find in Psalm 51. There is a line toward the end of the prayer that gives us a peek at what God desires in us.
Tomorrow, in John 5, we look at a man who was broken by society standards. He was an outcast left to rot, but Christ stepped into his brokenness and did what no one else was willing or able to do. Tomorrow, join us as we discover the amazing power of Christ in the midst of our brokenness.
